A detailed discussion on Business Rules
within PPS Planning application models is beyond the scope of this chapter.
The Schedule Current Updates link allows the model designer to set one or more
scheduled updates to the Current Period model property, and this property can then
be used in calculations of rolling cycles. For example, if a budgeting process is done
each quarter for the following quarter, a cycle could be set up that sets the budgeting
period to the start and end dates of the next quarter. This process could run on the
thirtieth day of each quarter in order to set up the time periods for the next quarter,
and dole out assignments for people to enter their budgets for the upcoming quarter.
After the model has been designed, the business rules have been written, and
the current period has been set, the model can be saved or checked in. Checking in
will automatically save the model to the PPS Planning system. The model is ready
to be deployed at this stage. Deployment is separate from saving. Saving a model
site saves the data on the server running the Planning Server, while deploying a
model site updates the data in the OLAP Cube which is the data source used by
the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel. Deployment does save the model changes
first, and all the models in the model site are checked to ensure that it they are valid.
Assuming the models are valid, the data is updated in the source systems so that end
users can perform their assignments.
