A data source connection provides the Planning Server
applications access to relevant business data for business intelligence purposes.
The source can be external to the Planning Server system, such as an existing
data warehouse. A data source connection can point to a database, or Data Source
View (DSV), which is an XML file that is created from a Microsoft SQL Server
2005 database. The connections that are created and configured in the Planning
Administration Console are logical connections, and these connection names can be
used in Planning Business Modeler.
The first step in creating a data source connection is to select the application
to which the data source connection should be added from the Application dropdown
list. After the application is selected, the model site to which the data source
connection should be added is selected by clicking on the radio button next to the
appropriate model site. This will enable the Add button. Clicking on this button
will open the Create a Data Source Connection dialog box. The fields Connection
name and Label are required fields as denoted by the asterisk next to them. The
Connection name will be used in Planning Business Modeler, whereas the Label is
a unique internal identifier for the connection. One out of the two available types
of connection sources can be selected here: database or Data Source View (DSV).

Depending on the type of source selected, the required information such as the
Server Name, Database Name, and File Location (which applies only to a DSV)
should be entered in the text boxes.
