It would be easy to add an additional filter to this particular chart. For example,
the manager for Canada might be curious about how many sales went through the
Reseller channel, so the Sales Channel hierarchy could be placed in the background
and the design can filter to just the Reseller channel. As you can see, the background
can hold multiple dimensions at once just as the series and bottom axis can do.
Figure 6-17 A simple report that is actually being filtered by multiple background
dimensions.

The background can also allow another feature as well: the selection of multiple
items from the same dimension. Imagine that the manager for Canada has done so
well with Canada that she is also made the manager for sales to the United Kingdom.
With the Sales Territory hierarchy still in the background, the developer can go into
the Member Selector and choose both Canada and the United Kingdom. Viewing
the chart shows the sum of the gross profit for both Canada and the United Kingdom
together. Turning on Show Information is very important here, because it lists all of
the members selected in the background. Figure 6-18 shows how this appears to the
user, with the countries listed in the information area of the report. In order to show
both countries separately in the report, the Sales Territory hierarchy would have to
be moved to either the Series or Bottom Axis panels.
