Multiple Measures
It is certainly possible to have multiple measures on a chart at once. A developer
can have multiple measures in either the Series or Bottom Axis. However, the tool
will not allow for there to be measures in both the Series and Bottom Axis panels at
the same time, as there would be no logical way to display the data. In addition, it
is not possible to have multiple measures in the Background; the reasoning will be
explained in the next section when filtering is discussed.
Placing multiple measures on either the X or Y axis may make perfect sense
depending on the analysis being done. Sometimes it makes more sense to do
this in a grid if the numbers vary widely. For example, Figure 6-15 shows three
measures on the Y axis: Sales Amount, Gross Profit, and Gross Profit Margin. In
the chart, however, only two bars are visible and, upon careful examination, there
is a dot that is half obscured by one of the bars. The two bars represent the first
Figure 6-14 Placing multiple dimensions on both the series and bottom axis allows a
simple chart to cover more detail.
