In reality, there can be multiple dimensions on both the Series and the Bottom
Axis, although this is done more often on Analytic Grids than on Analytic Charts.
Figure 6-12 A simple line chart created in an Analytic Chart
C h a p t e r 6 : A n a l y s i s w i t h P e r f o r m a n c e P o i n t S e r v e r a n d P r o C l a r i t y 153
The reason is simple: the chart quickly becomes cluttered with the additional
information. Figure 6-14 shows what happens when both Products and Sales
Territories are placed in the Series panel. Notice that the text for the legend doesn??™t
fit all the text, even though the area for the chart has been expanded. Also note that
the Bottom Axis now contains both the Date and Employee dimensions. The Big
Blue Bar represents the All level for both Date and Employee.
If this chart is viewed in the Preview mode and the user clicks on the Big Blue
Bar, what will happen? Will the bar drill down on just the Product Model Lines
hiearchy, just the Sales Territory hierarchy, or both? The answer is that the chart will
drill down only on the Product Model Lines hierarchy. The drill down occurs on the
first dimension in the Series panel. If the user wants to drill down on another one of
the dimensions, they??™ll have to right click on a bar and choose Switch To. There will
now be three Switch To statements, each representing one of the three dimensions
that are not the default for drilling down. Again, this type of view is often more
useful in a grid, as will be shown later.
