direction is bad. Imagine that a company is producing cardboard boxes and the boxes
have separate lids. The lids must fit snugly on the boxes but not be so small that they
will not fit. Additionally, if the lid is too large, the snug fit is lost. Therefore, there
is an allowable tolerance and any lids that are too large or too small are rejected
as defective. Therefore, centered indicators deal with issues when variances are a
problem. Standard indicators, on the other hand, are used when the scoring pattern is
either Increasing is Better or Decreasing is Better.
There is actually another category of indicators listed as Blank Indicator. This allows
businesses to create their own indicators. The indicators can be standard or centered and
have two to ten levels. Developers can then add custom graphics files for each level as
well as the text color, background color, and the display name for that level.
Under both Standard and Centered are several categories of existing indicators:
Gauges, Miscellaneous, Progress Bars, Smiley Faces, Stoplights, Thermometers, and
Trends. In order to add a new indicator for use with the current workspace in Dashboard
Designer, simply select the desired indicator and click OK.
