If a business decides it needs a more powerful trending algorithm than just
comparing the last two periods, there are two approaches. First, a KPI can be created
that includes the MDX necessary to perform the calculation. Second, a measure
could be built into the Analysis Services cube that performs the trending calculation.
Figure 5-21 This is a Sum Aggregation that has been added to the scorecard. Aggregations
are automatically available as part of the Details pane for a scorecard.

In either case, the trend indicators can be used to display the trend results to the end
user, because the arrows used to show a trend are simply indicators, just like the
red/yellow/green indicators seen so far.
Indicators
There are a number of indicators in PerformancePoint Server from which to choose.
So far the images shown have only included a simple, three position indicator called
the Stoplight. There are, however, a number of additional indicators and these
include some with more than just three positions.
Currently available indicators are displayed in the Workspace Browser, but more
can be added by clicking on the Indicator button on the Create ribbon. This opens the
Select An Indicator template dialog box. There are two basic categories of indicators:
Centered and Standard. Centered indicators are those used when the scoring pattern
for a KPI is Closer to Target is Better.
