Indicator
Count is just a count of the KPIs, while Worst Child works like a minimum function
to show the lowest score of all the child KPIs as the score for the entire objective.
The next section describes what can be done with the indicator. The indicator
image is shown by default, and this is often left turned on because it is the graphical
images that can help people grasp information more quickly. The indicator display
name varies by indicator but for the standard stoplight indicator, green appears as
On Target, yellow as Slightly Off Target, and red as Off Target. The target cells can
also be set to use the indicator foreground and background colors. Finally, the name
override option can replace the word Target in the column header with whatever is
typed into the textbox. Figure 5-16 shows an example of a scorecard in which the
target column was changed to not show any value, to show the score, and the name
override was set to Budget.
Note that in Figure 5-16 both indicators are circles, which means they are green.
However, the score for CY 2003 is 80.5% while the score for CY 2004 is 100%.
Recall from the earlier discussion that the score is based on the Best and Worst
settings. In this case, the default Best of 120% was left in place. While the actual
value in CY 2003 did beat the target, it was only about 108% of the target, and it
needed to reach 120% in order to get a score of 100%. The CY 2004 actual, on the
other hand, is approximately 140% of the target, meaning it passes the 120% Best
figure and therefore gets a score of 100%.
