This page allows designers to
launch the Dashboard Designer and view the Dashboard Web Preview site.
The Dashboard Designer is written in managed code and does not have to be
deployed ahead of time on each developer??™s machine. Instead, it can be downloaded
as needed. Because it is managed code, it runs inside its own protected area and
therefore does not require any security verification associated with items such as
ActiveX controls. And because it??™s a Windows Forms application, the user interface

is full featured and uses the same design elements as Office 2007, which includes the
use of the ribbon bar instead of a more traditional menu. Figure 5-2 shows what the
Dashboard Designer looks like when first opened.
The left side of the Dashboard Designer is called the Workspace Browser and
shows the objects that are currently available to be used; these objects may be
newly created or they may have been retrieved from the server. The Workspace
Browser shows the types of objects that can be created in the Designer: Dashboards,
KPIs, Scorecards, Reports, Data Sources, and Indicators. Dashboards represent
the top-level object and are therefore listed first.
